A cracking journey mate, and it's been an honour to be involved albeit from the other end of an internet commumication. Looking forward to seeing some of the photos. You must have thousands! It will be good to catch up with you properly to chat about your adventures over a pint or six so I will try to get up to Harrow sometime soon. I take it the Chinese was from Noodle City?

Who said no guinea pigs, from the "Sundat Telegraph" no less
Guinea pigs are popular food in Peru, we are told.
Now we don't want the British Cavy Council to be up in arms - but in the interests of culinary experiment we publish here two recipes from the Sunday Telegraph and several others we chanced upon... You never know when you might need them.....
"Picante de cuy" - Guinea Pig with spices
The whole guinea pig is marinated overnight in spices, including cumin, black pepper, paprika and dried red chillies.
Red and yellow peppers are also liquidised and added to the marinade just before cooking.
After marinating, the meat is barbecued and served whole, but split in two like a fillet.
"Cuyes en salsa de mani" - Guinea pigs with peanut sauce
The guinea pig is seasoned whole with salt and pepper and then slowly deep fried in vegetable oil.
It is then served with a creamy peanut sauce and traditionally accompanied by white rice, fried yuccas and boiled sweet potatoes.
Fried Guinea Pig (Ayacucho-style)
CUY CHAQTADO
1 guinea pig, de-haired, gutted, and cleaned
1/2 c. flour
1/4 - 1/2 t. ground cumin
salt and black pepper to taste
1/2 c. oil
Pat dry the skin of the guinea pig and rub in the cumin, salt, and pepper. Preheat oil. Dust the carcass with the flour and place it on its back in the oil, turning to cook both sides. Alternately, the guinea pig can be cut and fried in quarters.
Serve with boiled potato or boiled manioc root, and a salad of cut tomatoes and slivered onions bathed in lime juice and a bit of salt. Have cold beer on hand.

I see that you spent a few hours on the internet on Saturday - you could have bought the rucksack I had for sale on eBay, you fool! I'm not sure how much I'd've had to charge for postage, mind.
Back when I were a lad, I read the complete (as it was then) series of Erik Von Daniken's books on the Nazca lines (Chariots Of The Gods, etc) and whether God was really an astronaut! Fascinating stuff and seeing them for real must have been quite an experience.

Updates for you, Ireland won the Grandslam. Somehow England finished 2nd and scored more trys than everyone else!
No longer at the Ranch.
Jess and Georgina are now living in Ickenham and I am with Babs & Jason for a short while. I am buying a flat in Watford and just waiting for the paperwork to go thru'.

Great updates, as usual Dave. Bill Bryson must be quaking in his boots at the thought of a young(!) upstart taking over his travel writing mantle. Strange to think that it will soon be April, and then you'll be back "next month". Time flies, but you'll have some fantastic memories. I've had to console myself to the fact that I'll probably never undertake such a journey by watching David Attenborough programmes on the telly again! Last night's show had lots of sea lions, so your latest journal entry (sounds like you are Darwin!) was very apt.

Just caught up with the travels, sounds marvellous. An update on the sporting front, England back to winning ways England 34 v France 10. All to play for on Saturday, England v Scotland, France v Italy, I never thought I would be backing the Italians, all for third place. Ireland v Wales are playing for the top slot, which Ireland currently hold. On the football side no need for booking Wembley play-off tickets, hopefully we will still both be playing Championship football, otherwise it will be trips to sunny Leeds etc. I note you lost your phone, but not the camera, is it still working??? See you soon.

I see once a meerkat always a meerkat! Alan's right the snow has been bad, nightmare for pubs but a lot of people have had a lot of fun, kids and grown ups alike, we've had a snowman who sadly passed yesterday. I'd also like photos but more scenic for me please!

Hello Dave, noy sure if you get weather news from back in mud island. We have had snow for a week now, couldn't get to work for two days and more snow on the way. I am working from home again today. Still Ian may get a chance to use the snow board he got for his 40th for the first time.

Hello my old fruit,how are you it's great to hear from you. Whats all this about you climbing mountains,me thinks you've been watching the Sound of Music far to often,mind you I bet you can now yodel with the best of them. There is not a great deal of news to give you at this end. Same old Saturday; Spurs,Leeds and Coventry all lost and Plymouth ni all away to Ipswich. As i write we are bracing ourselves for lots of cold and LOTS of snowy weather. Did you hear about the bloke who lumbers into the Doctors; "What seems to be the trouble Mr Trollen" asks the doctor. "Well it's rather embarrassing actually Doc but I've got a cricket ball stuck up my arse". "Howzat". "Don't you bloody well start" I digress. If you climb Mt Kinabalu, don't let them get you out of bed at 2am to walk to the summit for dawn, unless you walk really really slowly. You'll end on sitting on top of the mountain freezing your wossits off in sub-zero temperatures for a couple of hours waiting for the dawn; it's definitely overrated as a passtime.

Hope you get some electric soon, just give some important world updates, you have Arsenal away in 3rd round and we have a hard one at home to Kidderminster, hope its not 1987 again. Plymouth now 9th 2 points of play offs. England RU lost to South Africa, Australia & New Zealand while your there if you are any good at cricket have a word with KP, could do with some help in that as well.

The new work sounds interesting and will be really rewarding. It's amazing how far some of the children walk to get to school and back - especially when you get into more rural areas.
When we went to Houts Bay we managed to see some whales, but it may be too late. Anyway - try to go to Boulders Rock to see the penguins while you're there.
Stacky's computer skills are coming on a treat - he is a wizz at emails and the internet now!!!
This weeks' work excitement was the launch of Bloodhound - Britains attempt at a new landspeed record - 1000 mph. Bits of the 'car' are on display at the Science Museum.

Hi Claudia, it's just our crazy British sense of humour! We are all looking forward to seeing the photos when Dave gets a chance to post them. Of course, if you have any really embarrassing photos of him that he wouldn't want to post to the internet for everyone to see, then my email address is just down there...I'll look after them safely for him :o)

Hi,
some people asked for the photos and also think, that Dave see the animals only on the TV… I can confidence, that he really is in Africa; “in the bush or camp”.
Yes - and this probably is/was his favourite volunteer (and the other way round), but she lives her life in Germany…
Nice stay for you Dave and also a good time in CapeTown.

Bonjour me ol' china, how the devil are you. See by your journal you're still having a triff time. The bad news is Spurs have lost again to the mighty Hull City, the good news is the Arse are still French. UEFA Cup draw just been made we've got Brazil, Argentina, Germany and Newport and you know how tricky those Welsh are. Harrow's a much quieter town without you, hurry up with the photos because I want to see what you're doing as well as read about it. Will write soon take care and enjoy yourself xxx

Glad to see you are enjoying the first leg and passing on useful tips, in case we should meet a large angry Rhino strolling down Station Road, mind you it is Harrow. As others have mentioned, where are the photos? Or are you parked up in a flat in Plymouth watching re runs of David Attenborough and then fooling us with the technology. I’m only jealous. The good news if you haven’t picked it up, Plymouth started winning! Stack through yet another wild party what will the locals think and I hope Stack will be able to repair the structural damage? I fell in love with Giraffe's when I was in Pilensburg Game Reserve, lovely animals, also had the opportunity to watch Elephants at a drinking hole, that was fantastic, one little cheeky elephant came up to the hide to blow bubbles while eyeballing us. Wildlife like that really takes your breath away.
When you come home expect to be quized on poo!!
